Se, storicamente, le esposizioni
universali ed internazionali offrono
l’occasione di una riflessione
sulla città e sull’architettura, la
costruzione di Expo Milano 2015
rappresenta anche un grande campo di sperimentazione e confronto
sugli approcci e le soluzioni tecnico costruttive, che si interrogano sui
temi dello sviluppo sostenibile coniugato in chiave di temporaneità.
Tale sollecitazione, benché strumento di indirizzo, proviene sicura-
mente dalle Linee Guida finalizzate al raggiungimento di obiettivi di
carattere ambientale nella progettazione, realizzazione, dismissione
e riutilizzo dei Padiglioni1, nel quadro degli strumenti che regolano
la partecipazione all’esposizione, ma costituisce anche un inevitabi-
le più generale stimolo culturale sia a fronte del perdurare della crisi
economica mondiale, sia del paradosso insito nell’applicazione dei
principi di sostenibilità ad un evento come Expo.
Quest’ultima è l’esplicita posizione del padiglione spagnolo che in
antitesi a stravaganti sofisticazioni formali, stante il budget ridotto
e la breve durata dell’edificio, adotta la forma semplice del portale
cuspidato in legno, che reitera lungo tutta la lunghezza del lotto a
realizzare due volumi giustapposti con involucro in policarbonato
alveolare, evocazione duplice delle costruzioni per la produzione,
le serre, ed il deposito del cibo, i granai. All’interno di questi spa-
zi quasi basilicali, i volumi espositivi, impreziositi dalla matericità
dell’involucro in sughero e in lamiera d’acciaio color oro e rosso,
che richiama l’olio ed il vino connotanti l’agricoltura iberica, sono
sollevati per consentire la totale permeabilità e l’accesso diretto alla
pergola con fragole in coltura idroponica e all’aranceto, che ribadi-
scono l’identità nazionale.
Allo stesso modo la Colombia affida il proprio messaggio alla suc-
cessione di quattro volumi svasati interamente il legno lamellare,
collegati da passerelle in quota, che ospitano spazi internamente
flessibili, grazie alla struttura portata tutta in corrispondenza dell’in- climate bands that characterises the South American state, due not
volucro. Ciascuno rappresenta e restituisce un piso termico, l’arti-
colazione in ecosistemi e fasce microclimatiche che caratterizzano il
territorio dello stato sudamericano, non tanto per l’alternarsi delle
stagioni e la latitudine quanto per il variare della quota sul livello
del mare. Anche le facciate si affidano ad una comunicazione per
immagini, ma non multimediali: sono stampate sulla pelle esterna
in membrana in PVC e sui due lati delle lamelle verticali in alluminio
piegato fissate con interasse regolare, per consentire letture diffe-
renziate a seconda dell’angolo di osservazione dall’esterno.
Improntato a grande semplicità compositiva e costruttiva è anche il
padiglione russo, interamente rivestito in legno come nelle costru-
zioni tradizionali, che si concede un unico grande gesto ad effetto
nello sbalzo di 30 metri sagomato in curva all’intradosso,

If, historically speaking, universal
and international exhibitions offer an
opportunity for reflection on cities
and their architecture, the building of
Expo Milano 2015
also constitutes a broad field of experimentation and exchange on
approaches and technical-building solutions to deal with issues of
sustainable development in a temporary context. This vocation un-
doubtedly comes from the Guidelines for achieving environmental
aims in the design, construction, dismantling and reuse of the Pa-
vilions1, part of the general framework regulating participation in
the Expo, but it also constitutes an inevitably more general cultural
stimulus in view of both the ongoing world economic crisis and the
paradox inherent in applying sustainability principles to an event
like Expo.
Given the limited budget and brief lifespan of the building, the
Spanish pavilion responds in antithesis to any extravagant sophisti-
cation of form, with a simple wooden portal frame reiterated along
the entire length of the plot, creating two juxtaposed volumes in
alveolar polycarbonate that represent a greenhouse - for food pro-
duction, and a granary - for food storage. Inside these basilica-like
spaces, embellished with the material essence of cork and by gold
and red sheet steel recalling the oil and wine that characterise Ibe-
rian agriculture, are the display areas. These are raised to allow for
total permeability and direct access to the pergola with hydroponi-
cally cultivated strawberries and an orange orchard that reaffirm the
national identity.
In the same way, Colombia entrusts its message to a sequence of four
vase-shaped volumes made of glulam, connected by overhead walk-
ways. These accommodate spaces that are internally flexible thanks
to the structure that is aligned with the outer shell. Each space forms
a piso termico, reflecting the articulation into ecosystems and micro-
so much to changing seasons and latitudes as to variations in altitude
above sea level. The facades too lend themselves to the communica-
tion of images, but not by multimedia: they are printed on the PVC
membrane of the outer skin and on both sides of the evenly spaced
vertical lamellae, made of folded aluminium, to enable differentiated
reading according to the angle of observation from outside.
The Russian pavilion is also distinguished by its simplicity of com-
position and construction. Clad entirely in wood like traditional
Russian buildings, it concedes itself a single sensational gesture in
the 30 metre cantilever, curved on the underside and clad in
