1Concetto di Esposizione
Expo. Come ben sappiamo,
proseguendo nella metafora culinaria,
qualsiasi ricetta, o esposizione
universale1, invitante e che si rispetti,
non si riduce in un semplice elenco
degli ingredienti. La sua buona riuscita dipende dalla pertinenza
delle materie prime, i soggetti coinvolti, dalla preparazione di que-
ste ultime, progetti architettonici e programma attività, dal loro ac-
costamento, non necessariamente prevedibile e scontato, dagli ade-
guati tempi di lavorazione e ‘cottura’ fino alla cura di presentazione,
immagine e ‘appetibilità’.
è un processo e argomento complesso, può essere affrontato da
differenti punti di vista, diverse chiavi di lettura, approcci, opinioni
e visioni, non solo tra soggetti pensanti distinti ma anche all’interno
del medesimo individuo.
Personalmente, un ginepraio di pensieri e riflessioni. Urge così una
semplificazione, se non della questione, del punto di partenza per
un’analisi non necessariamente univoca ma, per lo meno nella sua
prospettiva, esaustiva.
Qualche premessa e criterio. Con un’adeguata, e momentanea, so-
spensione del giudizio, si ipotizza di percorrere da ovest a est il sito,
secondo una delle due direttrice principali. Si prendono in esame
i partecipanti non ufficiali, legati alle specifiche aziende in gioco,
soffermandosi con particolare attenzione alle fattezze architetto-
niche dei sei padiglioni analizzati in mostra; dei quali, grazie alla
disponibilità degli studi progettisti, si è imparato a conoscere in di-
segni tecnici, metabolizzare in caratteristiche salienti e raccontarne
un’anteprima, antecedente alla loro fruizione reale.
Si costeggia il lato corto del Padiglione Zero, il prospetto lun-
go dell’Expo Center e si svolta nel percorso principale, noto con
il nome di Decumano, in onore della tradizionale organizzazione
dell’Urbs romana.
Al terzo affaccio sulla destra si scorge il Padiglione Caritas. Di ridot-
te dimensioni, si presenta come uno spazio espositivo coperto ad
un unico piano visitabile. La configurazione volumetrica non è altro
che la trasposizione plastica del pensiero portante dell’organismo
pastorale: “dividere per moltiplicare”. Gli ambiti spaziali vengono
scaturiti dalla suddivisione del volume totale iniziale in eguali por-
zioni mosse e aperte in nuove disposizioni, assicurando sempre un
vertice di contatto.
L’uso simbolico degli elementi architettonici è immediatamente per-

e quindi moltiplicazione, il toccarsi dei singoli ambiti spaziali quasi
come un tenersi per mano, la stessa idea di edicola dal rimando tipo-
logico religioso, la disposizione planimetrica ad abbracciare il visitato-

Expo. To carry on the culinary
metaphor, we know only too well
that any self-respecting recipe,
or any universal exposition1, is not
just a simple list
of ingredients. Its success depends on the pertinence of the raw ma-
terials - the people and things involved; on their preparation - archi-
tectural projects and program of events; on their combination - in
ways that are not necessarily expected or foreseeable; on adequate
preparation and ‘cooking’ times and on the attention paid to pres-
entation, image and ‘appeal’.
It is a complex matter that can be tackled from different standpoints.
Interpretations, approaches, opinions and visions may vary not only
between separate, thinking beings but also within the same indi-
vidual; personally a quagmire of thoughts and reflections. It calls
for simplification, not of the question itself, but of the starting point
for an analyse that may not lack ambiguity but that will at least be
exhaustive in its perspective.
A brief word of introduction. Momentarily suspending judgement
we shall take a hypothetical walk from west to east across the Expo
site, along one of its two main axes. We shall take a look at the non-
official participants, associated with the individual companies in
play, pausing for a closer look at the architectural features of the
six pavilions analysed in this exhibition. Thanks to the openness of
the design studios we have been able to get to know these through
their plans and technical drawings, identify their salient characteris-
tics and offer a preview, ahead of their actual realisation.
We go past the end of the Pavilion Zero, along the side of the Expo
Center and turn into the main street, called Decumano, in honour
of the traditional organization of the Roman Urbs. On the right you
can see the Caritas Pavilion, a small construction with a covered ex-
hibition space on one floor, offering a three dimensional represen-
tation of the underlying idea of the pastoral organization: “divide
to multiply”. The spatial zones emerge from the subdivision of the
initial total volume into equal portions that are moved and opened
into new arrangements, always ensuring a point of contact.
The symbolic use of architectural elements is immediately percep-
tible on various levels. The simplicity of the choices made conveys
a wealth of meaning: the division of volume signifies sharing and
therefore multiplying; single spatial areas touching seem almost to
hold hands; the impression of a shrine suggests religious connota-
